Finnish oilers

Finnish Army and Civil Guard oilers and solvent bottles

Every cleaning kit for the Mosin Nagant rifle is including an oiler. There many types of them, with different characteristics and markings. So they are collectible items. Between the Finnish production, we can distinguish the Army and the Civil Guard oilers. The one in the picture below is a Finnish Army one.

Finnish Army oilers for Mosin Nagant rifles

Used for maintenance and lubrication on the field, this Finnish Army example has a single compartment and is marked with the Army’s property mark. You can find more details on this marking in the Markings and Proofs section.

The “boxed SA” mark stands for Suomen Armeija (Finnish Army) and has been introduced at the beginning of 1942. The oiler above was conseguently in use with the Army during the Continuation War. It is marked on both sides as depicted in the two pictures above.

This type of Finnish Army oiler is composed by two parts soldered together, as you can see above and below.

An essential Mosin Nagant cleaning accessory

The bottle is unpainted, in the white, it has a diameter of 65mm and it has a single compartment instead of two (one for the gun oil and one for the bore cleaning solution) that we can usually find in Mosin Nagant oilers of other productions. The single cap is also marked, as you can see below.

The marking says “O.Y. G.W. SOHLBERG A.B.” stamped over the “boxed SA” Army property mark. O.Y. G.W. SOHLBERG A.B. is the manufacturer stamp, a Finnish Company that has been founded in 1908 and it seems to be still active today.
